Walking to Gara Rock
There are lots of fabulous restaurants and pubs in Salcombe but there’s nothing like a personal recommendation so here are two of our favourite places to eat!
A short walk from our Salcombe cottage is The Crab Shed. You simply head to the bottom of Island Street and across the boat park towards Batson and can’t miss it. Situated right on the quay side it quite literally serves the best crab, lobster and fish in the area (in our option!). The atmosphere is relaxed and casual and the restaurant has an interesting view of the estuary. The fish and shellfish are all locally sourced and quite literally come straight off the fishing boats! In addition to an inside restaurant area there’s also a beautiful waterside terrace where you can watch the fishing boats coming and going.
If you fancy earning your lunch with a longer walk, our other recommendation is Café Ode at Gara Rock. Head across the estuary on the ferry and take the coastal path to Gara Rock or head up the steps to East Portlemouth and take a slightly quicker route through the lanes. It’s really worth the walk with breath-taking views across the Atlantic and stunning coastal scenery. Again the atmosphere is relaxed and informal with lots of walkers using the restaurant during the day. The food is locally sourced and reasonably priced.
